Putin invited Europe to launch Sevpotok-2 to solve the crisis
According to the President of Russia, he raised this topic in a conversation with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, but he considered it “out of place”
Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed to resolve the energy crisis in Europe to launch the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. He told reporters about this following a working visit to Iran.
“We have one more route ready— Nord Stream 2. It can be run»,— Putin said.
He said that he raised this topic in a conversation with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, pointing out that Gazprom; has already reserved power and “they cannot hang in the air indefinitely.” However, Scholz, he said, replied that there were “more important questions”; and now “out of place” do it.
Then, Putin continued, he warned the chancellor that in this case, half of the volume of gas would be directed to domestic needs. «And«Gazprom» <…> I have already done this, so even if we launch Nord Stream 2 tomorrow, it will not be 55 billion cubic meters per year, but exactly half. And if we keep in mind that only the second half of the year is left of this year, then, therefore, one quarter, — concluded the president.
«Nord Stream-2»— gas pipeline from Russia to Europe across the Baltic Sea. It consists of two lines with a length of more than 1.2 thousand km each. The laying of the pipeline was complicated by US sanctions. In September 2021, Nord Stream 2 was completed.
In November, Germany suspended the certification of the gas pipeline, obliging its operator— Nord Stream 2 AG— bring its organizational and legal form in line with German law. Nord Stream 2 AG decided to create a “daughter” that will become the owner and operator of the German section of the gas pipeline, which the company did in January of this year by establishing Gas for Europe GmbH with headquarters in Schwerin, Germany.
